POULSBO, Sept. 6. - When Roy Damitz, 22, marine veteran and local logging operator, resumes operations tomorrow, he will have one more bulldozer than he had Friday night, all because a close friend gambled - and won.
Bill Lofall, commercial fisherman and four friends, Albert Vaa, Emil Malen, Alfred Peterson and Clifford Whitworht, all of Poulsbo, were unimpressed when a Seattle salvage firm told Damitz the 10 ton bulldozer he lost a month ago, when the barge on which he was transporting it across Hood Canal capsized, would not be found.
Lofall and the four friends started seining Hood Canal, at a point between Sunset Beach, and South Point, Jefferson County.
They seined for days. Then last Wednesday tehy hit pay dirt, but not for long. A storm tossed their little fishing craft about and finally succeeding in tearing loose the cable they had hooked onto the machine.
They went to Port Townsend and secured a 60 foot scow and returned to the scene. It was a slow, nerve wracking job. It took a total 13,110 pulls, 57 for every foot the cat was raised, but the slightly discolored machine appeared on the surface. Time consumed: two days.
Today Lofall paid a call on Damitz and collected his bet: $1000 for locating the machine, another $1000 for getting it back on shore.
